Balcony Renovations Built to Last

Balconies are exposed to rain, sun and wind every day, so a balcony renovation is as much about protecting the structure as it is about looks. Failed waterproofing and poor drainage are some of the most common causes of leaks into the rooms below. Hawk Services renovates balconies with the right waterproofing, falls and drainage, then finishes them with durable surfaces and safe balustrades.

Our Balcony Renovation Services

  • Waterproofing – removing failed membranes and installing new systems suited to external areas. Our article comparing waterproofing systems explains the options.
  • Drainage and falls – correcting falls and upgrading outlets so water leaves the balcony quickly. See our guide to balcony drainage.
  • Tiling and decking – outdoor-rated tiles, timber or composite decking. Compare options in our guide to balcony decking materials.
  • Balustrades and railings – glass, aluminium or steel balustrades installed to the National Construction Code height and strength requirements.
  • Privacy and shade – screens, louvres and shade options. See the best balcony privacy screens.
  • Lighting, ceilings and painting – the finishing touches that make the space usable day and night.

Houses, Units and Strata Buildings

We work on balconies for freestanding homes and for apartments. In strata buildings, balcony waterproofing and balustrades are often common property, so owners corporation approval may be needed before work starts. We can help you prepare the information your strata manager will ask for.

Our Process

  1. Inspection – we check the existing surface, membrane, drainage and balustrade condition.
  2. Quote – an itemised quote covering demolition, waterproofing, finishes and any repairs.
  3. Renovation – strip-out, repairs, waterproofing with proper curing time, then tiling or decking and balustrades.
  4. Handover – final inspection and waterproofing documentation.

Balcony Renovation FAQs

How do I know if my balcony waterproofing has failed?
Common signs include water stains or bubbling paint on the ceiling below, cracked or drummy tiles, efflorescence (white powder) on grout and water pooling after rain.

Can you tile over existing tiles?
We generally do not recommend it on balconies, because it hides membrane problems and adds height at the door threshold. Removing old tiles lets us fix the waterproofing properly.
